In a recent interview with GameSpot, Yasue revealed that a PlayStation 4 compilation of all previous Kingdom Hearts games could be on the cards for Square Enix. But before fans get too excited over the prospect of revisiting Sora, Donald, and Goofy in HD, Square Enix has not yet given official confirmation on a Kingdom Hearts compilation.
As for an update on the progress on Kingdom Hearts 3, Yasue briefly said that development was in full swing and that it is “moving along fine”.
This isn’t the first time that a new Kingdom Hearts compilation has been rumored to be in the works. Just last year, word leaked out that Square Enix was working on something called Kingdom Hearts 2.9, though nothing new has come out of that leak.
Should a PlayStation 4 Kingdom Hearts compilation come to fruition, it would make sense on multiple levels for Square Enix and Sony. The last significant console release was 2014’s Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix, which came out on the PlayStation 3. With Sony’s PlayStation 4 currently outselling all its competition and on track to double Xbox One sales by 2019, it would make sense for Square Enix to take advantage of the PlayStation 4’s growing player base.
The release of a brand new compilation would not only bring every existing Kingdom Hearts game - console and handheld - into one tidy package, but given that Kingdom Hearts 3’s release window still yet to be announced, this hypothetical compilation would also help bring players up to speed on the series’ story before Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally released.
While the PlayStation 4 Kingdom Hearts compilation is nothing more than a possibility for now, gamers can at least look forward to a new bundle in the form of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, which is scheduled for the end of this year.
